How assessments and timed exams work.

Assessments check you're ready before you move on.

Most units end with a short assessment. Some tracks also have a timed exam you must pass to continue.

Four kinds, and the XP each pays the first time you pass it.
  1. Finish a unit's lessons to unlock its assessment.
  2. A timed exam is done in one sitting, against one time limit.
  3. Reach the pass mark to clear the checkpoint. You can try again if you miss it.

How the time limit works

One time limit covers the whole exam, worked out from the number of questions plus a little slack. Time you save early is there for the harder questions later.

A timed exam does not save drafts

Opening the exam again starts the clock from the top, and anything you typed is gone. If time runs out, that attempt ends and you can take it again straight away.

Testing out

Some units offer a test-out. Pass it once and the whole unit is marked complete without working through its lessons. On the Foundation track, passing the kana exam can clear the whole track in a few minutes if you already read kana.
Opening a timed exam starts its clock, so open it when you have time to finish.
